Stockholm is built on a group of islands connected by beautiful bridges and boat service. It is 50 miles to the Baltic Sea from Stockholm and the archipelago consists of over 24,000 islands and rocks. Spend a whole holiday, a weekend or one day exploring the area.

Don't miss the old town center (Gamla Stan) with many well preserved medieval buildings built during the 17th and 18th century. Visit Kungliga Slottet, the royal castle built in 1754 with over 600 rooms, located at the northeastern end of Gamla Stan. Visit the open air museum at Skansen on Djurgården island with farms and cottages from all over Sweden. Don't miss the Vasa Museum built around a warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. Drottningholm, located on an island outside the city, is the palace where the royal family lives. Take the royal tour shown below for a visit.
