Washington DC is the capital of the United States. There are many historical government buildings, monuments and museums to visit.
Smithsonian Institute is a group of museums that are among the best in the world and there is no admission charge. It is possible to visit the US Capitol, White House and all of the memorials with no charge. Because of increased security, visiting the Capitol and White House take planning and a longer time than in the past, but they are still open to all visitors.
A day trip on the Potomac River to visit Mount Vernon, the home of the first president, is a relaxing way to get away from the city.
